  11. When the monitor is turned on, power
  12. flows into the power supply. This
  13. converts the house current into
  14. several voltages. Some of this
  15. power goes to the electron gun at
  16. the back of the picture tube. The
  17. gun is always ready to fire a
  18. stream of electrons at the front of
  19. the picture tube. The inside of the
  20. glass at the front is coated with a
  21. chemical that will glow if it is
  22. hit by electrons. This coating is
  23. similar to the coating inside a
  24. fluorescent light.
  25.     To make the electrons hit the
  26. screen hard and light it up, the

  29. screen is given a strong positive
  30. voltage by a transformer called the
  31. flyback.
  32.     There is a wire between the
  33. circuit board and the electron gun
  34. that can turn it on and off quickly.
  35.     Around the back of the picture
  36. tube are some coils of wire called
  37. the yoke. When electricity flows
  38. through the yoke, a magnetic field
  39. is created which controls the
  40. electron beam.
  41.     Without the yoke, the
  42. electron beam would always hit the
  43. center of the screen. All you would
  44. ever see is a small white dot.
